Friday, June 29th--Last Day of the School Year--Report cards will be sent home on this day.

Happy Track In!

Welcome back 1st graders!  We have 7 more weeks until the end of the school year and our days will be packed with learning.  Here are the things we are learning about:

Reading: We will be focusing on identifying main idea/details and determining the central message or "lesson learned" with fiction texts.  We will spend a lot of time reviewing RAPS (restate the question, answer the question, prove your answer from text evidence and say it out lout) to prepare for the end of year reading assessments.

Math:  We are continuing to work on reading, analyzing, and answering word problems.  We will begin working on adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers next week.

Science:  We are beginning our living things unit today!  In this unit we will investigate and plant seeds as well as observing millipedes and pill bugs.

Writing:  We are finishing up our "author's as mentors" unit.  We will then be focusing on reviewing the writing types from the year (letters, all about, opinion, narrative, etc...) and becoming experts on these types of writing.

Math Fact Fluency

We have spent a lot of time in math this year learning various strategies for adding and subtracting.  Now we are adding in time building our fluency on facts within 10.  Now they’ll have time in class (during math time) to work on building fluency, and I’d love for you to give them time to practice at home also! I told them that my kids and I used to keep flashcards in the car so they could practice as we were going to and from school, the grocery store, etc. You can find flashcards at Dollar Tree and many other local stores. There are also many websites with games and activities to practice, like THIS ONE or THIS ONE for addition, and THIS ONE and THIS ONE for subtraction.

Happy Track Out!

Image result for reading strategies

Since we did not have school today I wanted to wish everyone a happy track out!  While on track out, I am hoping everyone will be reading every day.  When your child gets stuck on a word, review with him/her the strategies in the picture above.  You may also want to have your child respond in written form comprehension questions about the book they are reading.  Using the RAP strategy, listed in the picture below, can help your child answer the questions fully.

Headphones

Please send in headphones or earbuds for your child to use.  They will be used only by your child and will be kept in your child's book bag.  This will aid in BYOD or the use of school technology.

Thank you!

Hooray for BYOD day!

Today we began BYOD in our classroom!  We will try to have a BYOD time at least once a week--usually Friday's.  Here are some things to remember:

*If your child has not turned in a signed permission slip, he/she may not participate in BYOD.
*Please let me know if you would not like to participate (they will use a school device instead).
*Devices need to be charged before coming to school (we will not charge them here).
*Please supply your child with headphones for their BYOD device.
*When not in use, students will "park" their device and headphones in their book bag.

BYOD schedule:  (Your child may bring their device to school on these dates, as long as we have a signed permission slip!)
